Good Samaritan Ministries logo Woman helping a senior citizen

Many in Illinois are feeling the effects of the State budget impasse. Some of our fellow agencies in Southern Illinois have been forced to shut their doors, cut services and lay off employees. The grant funds Good Samaritan Ministries receives from the State of Illinois represent about one-fifth of our total funding for the year. These funds go directly to support the operations of the Emergency Shelter. To say we might be forced to make decisions about laying people off or closing our doors; goes without saying, this is a day to day struggle.
At the moment we have 21 people staying at the shelter with more waiting for help.

The donations we receive from the community makes up a little over one-half of our budget.
It is truly because of our supportive and caring community that we have kept our doors open since 1984.
Thank you for your support through these trying times.

Winter can be a dark time of year when it is hard to find warm shelter and food. Our caring community can provide a little light and warmth. We send an appeal to you in the hope that you will become or continue to be a Light Giver to the less fortunate.

  • No days without someone being sheltered and fed

  • *Breakfast, lunch and dinner served daily

  • *24 hour staffing 7 days a week

Poverty, hunger, and homelessness are very pervasive facts at Good Samaritan Ministries and other agencies in the area. Agencies like Good Sam are struggling with diminished funds and increasing numbers of hungry and homeless families. Over the past 6 years we have seen increases in all our programs.

  • Our Food Pantry clients have increased 150%.

  • Our Soup Kitchen has increased 115%.

  • Our Emergency Shelter nights stayed have increased 130%.

  • Our Emergency Assistance Program has increased 150%.

It is no exaggeration to say the contributors to Good Samaritan Ministries are actually “Giving Light”. Your donation assures that Good Sam can continue to provide services to the poor, both through the direct buying power of your donation and the matching-fun government grants require. All donations make a difference in many people’s lives. Good Sam operates under a very strict and currently limited budget. We make use of donated goods and services and depend on volunteers.

Expenses are monitored with care as we strive to be the best stewards of the money entrusted to us.
Please take a moment to fill out the donation form and share your blessings with the poor this winter.
